At the same time we should also be aware of our own anxieties and the degree to which they might distort our own behaviour and limit our capacity to deal adequately with the situation. For a teacher, the basic anxieties can have the behaviour distortions of Table 3.8.

Bill Rogers, in his behaviour-recovery programme, makes the point that at the teacher-intervention stage we sometimes forget that new behaviours often have to be taught. Just as reading and writing have to be taught through small incremental steps, so change and improvement in behaviour has also to be worked at. This parallels Don Blackerby’s reminder (1996) that how to learn or do something also has to be taught. In that teaching, I believe it is possible to bring about changes in behaviour, “conversationally”. The belief that words do work is the key intervention strategy advocated throughout this book. The basic rules of this behavioural training approach are:
